Bachelor of Science

Bachelor of Science (BSc) students can include Sustainability in their degree in a variety of ways.

Environment, Sustainability & Society (ESS) can be a central focus of a BSc degree in a Double Major or Combined Honours degree. Students study ESS along with any subject from the Faculty of Science or the Faculty of Computer Science. These degree programs are 120 credit hours, meaning that they typically take 4 years to complete, same as a Single Major or Concentrated Honours degree.Ìý

Students who may want to pursue graduate studies should consider a Combined Honours degree, which typically requires an Honours Thesis (supervised independent research project) in one of the two chosen subjects, usually in fourth year. Meet with your Academic Advisors about subject-specific course and GPA requirements before or during third year!

Work-integrated learning options

BSc students with ESS as a Major or Honours subject may also complete Sustainability Work-Integrated Learning, with Sustainability Co-op (3 paid work terms) or Sustainability Work Experience Program (1 paid work term). Gain Sustainability-related work experience as an undergrad and hit the ground running when you graduate! Learn more

Minor options

For students who want to fit Sustainability into their degree without choosing it as a Major or Honours, ESS can also complement any 120 credit-hour BSc degree as a Minor.ÌýLearn more

Certificate options

Students can also integrate Sustainability into a BSc degree with one or more Certificates:

  • The Certificate in ESS; the Certificate in Communicating Sustainability; or the Certificate in Food, Agriculture and Sustainability can be obtained by completing specific courses, which may also satisfy other degree and program requirements.ÌýLearn more about these certificates
